Sightseeing Rio de Janeiro fall into a few disinct categories, headed by the standout natural landmarks: Corvovado, the Shugar loaf and the Dois Irmaos mountains at the end of Leblon, the beaches, the bay and the forest.

The famous ball-shaped mountain crag, which locally is called Pão de Açúcar, is almost 400 meters high and offers stunning views over the city. You take the first path up to the gondola station at Morro da Urca and from there continue up to the top of the next track. From here you can see Copacabana and Ipanema extend miles beneath you. There are restaurants and cafes, souvenir shops and colonies of small monkeys.
The Gondola Line, which opened in 1912,is going from 0800 in the morning to 2200 in the evening. It costs approx. 40 USD for a return ticket all the way to the top. Children under five goes free. If you want to watch photos of Sugarloaf

Parque Nacional da Tijuca

If the botanical garden is too small and organized, try the Tijuca-forest. This 3200 acre Atlantic rainforest is home to hundreds of species of wild animals, like sloth, armadillos and monkeys. Moreover, it has an extensive flora of wild-growing fruit trees, a rich bird life, waterfalls and caves. Tijuca National Park has been since 1861. Those with extra stamina can also sharpen up on the 1018 m high Pico da Tijuca. The park opens at the time. 0700 and closes at sunset.
When sightseeing Rio de Janeiro you have also got the man-made addidions:Cristo Redendor, The Maracanna stadium, Jardim Botanico, the modernis architechture, the grand old palaces and theatres and the narrow streets of the Centro and the Santa Teresa.
Cristo Redendor
The name says you may not know much, but Rios common postcard motif, this 38 meter high statue of Jesus with his outstretched arms on the top of the over 700 meters Corcovadofjellet, just behind the Copacabana.You can drive or take a taxi up here for approx. 200 NOK return or take the specially designed train which runs every half hour from at. 0800 in the morning. The price is approx. 85 kroner, and the view is by far the best from the right side of the train. What is so special about a statue of 38 meters? Why was this statue named one of the world's new wonders of the 7/7-07?
No trip to fotballmestrenes homeland is perfect without a visit to one of the world's largest stadiums, Maracanã. During the World Cup final in 1950 (as Brazil also lost) rumored that around 200 000 spectators were allowed in the stadium, but it has now been modified to approximately 97 000 seats.
To attend a football game here is an experience of a European, as doubtful has experienced anything similar. Here thundered samba drums for hours before the fight, huge supporter flags spread out over the audience, colored smoke bombs and romerlys burned off, and all the spectators are apparently over in hysterical panic when the opposing team comes up on their court.

Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden was founded already in 1808 and is one of over 140 hectares large area with six lakes and thousands of different plants and flowers, mainly from Brazil. It has a separate department of Amazonas. There are several hiking trails and picnic areas that can tempt when you want to get away from the tourist crowds and find your own quiet, green corner.
Teatro Municipal
This nearly century-old theater is decorated with statues, huge gilded mirrors, stone glass windows and chandeliers. It is well worth discovering whether you should see a show or just take a tour.

On the headland between Copacabana and Ipanema, this fort, which in 1914 was built to defend the city against invaders from the sea. There are exhibitions of weapons and guns and a great view of Copacabana.
