Rio de Janeiro nightlife

The Rio de Janeiro nightlife is one of the best in the world. Although it isn't as sophisticated as Sao Paulo or Buenos Aires (other South American cities), the nightlife gets crazy because of the Cariocas (Rio de Janeiro locals).

Rio de Janeiro has everything a partygoer needs to have a great time: Beautiful people, a great mix of nightlife (bars, lounges, sophisticated clubs, large venues, special events, etc.). Whether you are looking for a relaxing bar to have a couple of "chopps" (draft beer) or want to get decked out and party with Rio's high society, Rio has the scene for you. It’s definitely a good place to spend a lot of time going out but you’ll need to adjust your cultural parameters a bit to really get the best of it. Whilst there do exist some interesting clubs, many of the best scenes are all on the street in sporadic gatherings of samba rehearsing for carnival or just street parties like in Lapa or Gavea.

The Rio de Janeiro nightlife is not about getting drunk and picking a fight either, it’s a very light, buzzy affair where the idea is to chat and flirt to the maximum. Whilst everyone drinks beer and cachaca, you’ll rarely see anyone too drunk to walk here. Getting trashed isn’t the Rio way, getting laid is.

The Rio de Janeiro nightlife has an active clubber circuit. If you love to dance the night away, you will not run out of options. Local and guest DJ's spin every night the latest disco, house, garage, techno, trance, pop, funk, hip-hop and other dancy beats. Things never really pick up until after midnight, so you have time to enjoy a good meal, or warm up at the bars and cafes.

One thing you might be wondering is where can I meet locals and make new friends or maybe start a romance? First you should learn a little about Cariocas, and their ways. After this brief introduction you are ready to go out, and get to know lots of interesting people in Rio. One of your best bets are Rio's famous Baixos. These are South Side streets that gather several cafés, bars and restaurants. They are natural meeting spots for the young and restless, and the young at heart. The atmosphere is usually friendly and relaxed.

If you are coming from a country with tight drinking regulations, note that the concept of brown-bagging is completely alien to Brazilians (and laughable, if you try to explain it). Even simple street bars, known as botequins or pés-sujos, are licensed - and you do not have to hide what you are drinking!
